Gergovia and the Gallic wars

A Gallo-Roman sanctuary

It is at Gergovia (plateau located at the gates of Clermont-Ferrand), that Ceasar admitted to losing a battle in 52 BC. Complete occupation of the oppidum probably started just before the Gallic Wars.

We know little of the Gallic city, partly hidden under 'Roman-style' buildings erected shortly after the Conquest of Gaul.

Gergovia has revealed numerous remains of buildings and a proliferation of furniture, examples of both local production and imports.

At the foot of the plateau, archaelogical research undertaken since 2001 has been devoted to the fortifications of the oppidum.

At the centre of the plateau, a formerly identified Gallo-Roman sanctuary is being studied again.

Since 2006, digs have revealed a monumental entrance.... and a layer of Roman urban constructions.

At the dawn of our era, Gergovia was abandoned in favour of a new town called Augustonemetum, or modern-day Clermont-Ferrand.

The term 'oppidum' was used by Julius Ceasar to designate the most important Gallic cities that has been encountered during his military campaigns from 58 to 51 BC.

We can identify more than 150, scattered from the South of England to Central Europe.

The site, now called Plateau de Gergovie, is also a village located on a hill within the town of La Roche-Blanche, near Clermont-Ferrand. Some walls and earthworks still survive from the pre-Roman Iron Age.
